Big Idea: We shape the local environment, and the local environment shapes who we are and how we live.
Yukon First Nations ways of knowing and doing
Gr. 1 ADST Big Ideas
Students were introduced to the idea of shelter building by sharing pictures and knowledge of traditional Yukon First Nation shelters. Traditional Territory was acknowledged with the students.
We then focused the students on core competencies, specifically Personal and Social: Social Responsibility and Building Relationships:
Students then worked in groups of 3-4 to construct model shelters. Each group was given:
sticks (essentially kindling)
a spool of twist ties
a roll of green burlap to represent spruce bows
Following construction of the models students self-assessed themselves. They choose one of the 'I can' statements from Social Responsibility and Building Relationships and then drew a picture to express this reflection.
The following week students were given a chance to construct life-sized shelters based on the knowledge and skills they gained in the classroom. Students again focused on self-assessment of core competencies (Personal and Social: Social Responsibility and Building Relationships). Notice the chart hanging in the tree.
Following the shelter construction students choose one of the core competency 'I can' statements and verbally shared with the class when they noticed themselves practicing this behaviour during the lesson.
This is the core competency self-assessment template we used.
